Does the family cower in fear every time Mom brings her newest culinary creation to the dinner table? Are you tired of reaching for the Pepto-Bismol? A new reality show might give her some ideas.
On Jan. 3, Food Network premiered a new competition series called "Worst Cooks in America", a show that combines elements of "Top Chef" and "What Not to Wear" and is as inspiring as it is entertaining. The show is hosted by TV Personality Anne Burrell and Executive
Chef Beau MacMillan. Burrell is known for her Food Network show "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef ", a show focusing on making easy, restaurant-style food at home, and makes appearances on "Iron Chef America" as Iron Chef Mario Batali's sous chef. She is also an instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. MacMillan is the executive chef at Elements Restaurant in Paradise Valley, AZ. He is also the personal chef for Wayne Gretzky and has cooked for such personalities as President George W. Bush, Britney Spears, U2, Michele Richard, Jacques Pepin and Michele Roux, Sr.
The premise of the show is to teach 12 of the worst cooks in America how to cook by completing a culinary boot camp. The final two chefs will serve their food to three food critics as if the dishes were prepared by experienced chefs, and the winner will receive $25,000.
In the first episode, Chefs Burrell and MacMillan tasted the best dishes of 24 hopeful chef- wannabes and picked the 12 worst to teach. Their best dishes ended up coming out of the kitchen as culinary disasters and was both hilarious and unbelievably sad to watch. Burrell and MacMillan chose the team for the other chef to make it more difficult for the other. Each episode also features a Skill Drill, in which each chef has to demonstrate a skill they just learned, and a Main Dish Challenge, requiring the chefs to create an entree dish for the judges to sample. After both are completed, the weakest chef on both teams is eliminated. This is the opportunity to not only be entertained but possibly learn new tricks in the kitchen.
"Worst Cooks in America" airs on Sunday evenings at 10 p.m. on Food Network (Channel 55 for Time Warner Cable and 56 for Charter Communications).
