The Joanne Hawkins Music Building rang with the sounds of instrumental music on Jan. 25 and 26 as the Concert and Jazz bands at California Baptist University worked diligently to record their first album. Although CBU's multiple choirs have been recording for several years, this was the first time any instrumental groups have been able to utilize CBU's recording facilities.
"It was a lot of fun and it was exciting because it was the first recording that these bands recorded at CBU," Ben Jillson, who plays alto saxophone in both ensembles, said. On Monday, Jan. 25, the Concert Band recorded, followed by Jazz Band on Tuesday. Concert Band is comprised of a wind, brass and percussion section and contains about 55 members.
"This is the first time these groups have recorded and it represents a huge growth in the musicianship," Chris Ritchie, percussionist, said.
Jazz Band, which first performed at CBU in 2003, recorded tracks including "Agua de Beber," a Latin style piece and "Act Your Age," a jazz classic. "It's a little more difficult than a University Choir and Orchestra recording because we all play together in one take," Jillson said.
The albums are expected to be released shortly before spring break, just before Concert Band embarks on a tour of the Bay Area and will be available for purchase at either of the bands' performances or at the music building.
Guy Holliday, assistant professor of music, directs both ensembles.
