School Datebooks, the company that prints California Baptist University's student handbooks notified CBU staff that they were conducting a cover contest, in which a one-time elimination voting system would determine which school goes on to the next round of competition.
Voting began a few weeks ago. Students may recall the e-mail from Mrs. Dannita Morris in Student Services, and if students continue to vote, CBU just may be able to make it to the top.
"The prize for this contest is $1,000. The winning school can choose how to use the money. CBU has chosen to donate it to Haiti if voted through to winning," Morris said.
The contest is a competition between schools that use School Datebooks as a printer. There are two levels, K-12 and College/University. Voters have sent the CBU cover all the way to the semifinals despite the number of schools that participated.
According to Morris, the winnings will be presented to the people of Haiti through the Southern Baptist Disaster relief group.
Edgar Garcia is a graphic designer for CBU's Marketing and Communication Division. He designed the handbook cover.
"Well it's pretty exciting, right? I mean, I think it is!" Garcia said when asked how he felt about it.
Garcia also said that he is brain storming on ideas for next year's handbook.
Students can vote as many times as they want to, which has helped quite a bit in the running, especially considering the disadvantages of competing against schools from the East Coast, because they can vote about three hours before CBU students.
Large charity organizations have donated money that was not raised by the organization itself, such as Invisible Children; the group won a contest on Facebook similar to the cover contest and donated the money to Haiti as well.
