An unidentified man was shot and later died at the 3600 block of Monroe St. on Mar. 7. According to a written statement, police responded to reports of a shooting at 9:26 p.m. and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the torso.
"The victim was transported to Riverside Community Hospital. Once at the hospital the victim was taken into surgery, and later died from his injuries," the release said.
The 3600 block of Monroe Street borders the campus on the West edge past the Lancer Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Police closed Monroe Street between Diana Avenue and Magnolia Avenue for an investigation. John Phillips, who lives in the houses on Diana Avenue, noticed the crime scene when he returned from a concert with the University Choir and Orchestra.
"I do not really feel intimidated by it too much, but it is kind of scary that these things happen just like a few doors down from you," Phillips said. "I have been seeing the public safety car driving around my neighborhood a lot more lately, so I think they're stepping it up which is comforting."
Director of Public Safety, Jim Walters, said that Public Safety did not respond to the incident since it happened off campus, but that they were in contact with the police about whether it had any campus concern.
"We've been in contact with the police and there is no relationship to the university community in any way, other than the fact that it just happened to occur next-door to us. There was never any threat or cause for concern among the university community," Walters said.
