More than 200 California Baptist University students gathered at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel to celebrate Yule on Dec. 6. This semi-formal dinner is a long running CBU tradition to honor Mr. and Mrs. CBU and was hosted by the Campus Activity Board.
Judy Chamberlain and her band played jazzy versions of Christmas songs during the meal and ComedySportz, L.A. performed improvised comedy sketches.
Tim Hawley and Dayna Christian were awarded the title of Mr. and Mrs. CBU by Carson Belmont and Jamie Drake, last year's Mr. and Mrs. CBU. Five male students and five female students are nominated every year by the senior class. Graduating seniors who attended the school at least three semesters with a minimum 2.5 GPA were eligible. ASCBU assisted with the nominations and elections.
The dinner was served buffet style with chicken, salmon, and beef. After dinner, there was a large dessert spread. In addition to the food and performances, the photo booth where couples could memorialize the night with a picture had a long line. The booth was open before and after dinner.
ComedySportz performed a variety of different improvised skits with feedback from the students. One of the skits required a student to make sound effects for the ComedySportz team members. Sophomore Michael Magiera was called out of the audience after attempting to volunteer a friend.
Red, black, and white were popular colors of the night from the red tablecloths to the attire of the students. All students received Christmas ornaments in red and white that were made by ASCBU.
This was the first year Yule was held at the Grand Californian Hotel. In previous years, Yule had been held at the Disneyland Hotel, but this year Disney had a scheduling conflict so the newer hotel became available.
Andrew Hochradel, senior, enjoyed the new venue. "It was a nice change in scenery and a more serene atmosphere although a little less magical," Hochradel said.
