The Department of Natural and Mathematical Sciences introduced two new majors.
These new majors are designed to better equip California Baptist University students who wish to pursue post-graduate degrees in scientific fields. The new majors that are being offered are: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major and a Chemistry major.
The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major is built primarily from courses that are offered within the Biology major. It is modified for students that plan to apply to medical and other health-related professional schools.
"These majors can better prepare students for graduate schools after graduating," Professor and Department Chair of Department of Natural and Mathematical Sciences Lisa Hernandez said.
The Chemistry major is built upon the preexisting Chemistry minor that is currently being offered at CBU. This major is designed to meet and equip the needs of students who wish to pursue a degree in chemistry coupled with their choice in concentration. The four concentrations offered allow for a diverse post-graduate experience.
Within the Chemistry major, a student may choose to concentrate in one of four fields of study: Advanced Studies in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Secondary Chemistry Education, or Pre- Medical Chemistry. These options allow a student to have the options of going to medical school, teach chemistry, or pursue a career in the growing field of "green science".
Hernandez said that the school's size was a major factor in designing the curriculum.
Programs from other universities were used to consider what CBU can offer and how well the school would compare to nearby universities such as the University of California in Riverside. After initial research by department members, the proposed curriculum is taken to the curriculum committee and the Board of Trustees for final approval.
Although CBU may be considered a small campus, there are plans to create and expand on campus facilities and laboratories in order to better meet the needs of students who are pursuing Chemistry and Molecular Biology.
Hernandez said that plans to expand depend on the school's budget and donors.
