While "The Banner" has been the California Baptist University's paper since the beginning, there may be other papers starting on campus.
Resident Director Rick DiFlorio has confirmed that Smith Hall will start its own paper, but that the paper is not going to be in competition with "The Banner". The resident assistants of Simmons Hall, have also confirmed that they are starting a paper for their dorm. The paper will be more of an article than an actual paper.
According to the RA's the paper was originally put on hold because there were not enough people to write for it. It was a matter of manpower and time.
"The paper will only be about one page and will be posted on the bathroom stalls for the girls to read. It is meant for the girls to get to know the R.A's" sCarissa Gonzales, an R.A of Simmons Hall said.
The paper will feature top places on campus, ways to stay focused on school and new concoctions at the caf. It will be very relaxed according to Gonzales.
"We're excited for it, it's a new project. We're going to see how the girls like it and learn as we go" Gonzales said.
According to DiFlorio, the Smith Hall paper is going to be about four pages in length which includes a cover, two middle pages and a back page. The paper is going to have information about what is going on in each of the halls of the dorm. "It will also talk about events coming up in the dorm. The resident advisors are very excited about the paper starting up," DiFlorio said.
"I think it's a great idea. It's more directly relevant to their lives than "The Banner". It will be about guys they know so it will peak their interest," Nick Braden, RA of 1B, said.
The paper is expected to be published towards the end of March, though DiFlorio said that he would like the paper to be released sooner. Banner staff members Robby Paprocki and John Beam are going to be the two main people handling the paper.
"It can be good for them. The freshmen get to hear about themselves and not about the upper classman," Chriss Grimm, RA said.
According to DiFlorio, the paper will feature two major events coming up. The first event was held on Feb. 19, and is called the "Man Auction." It is a part of Woo Week, which is opposite of TWIRP. The second event that the paper is going to feature is an event on Mar. 6 between California Baptist University and Azusa Pacific University's male dormitories which are both named Smith Hall. The competitive event is going to hold Olympic-like events such as basketball, swimming, eating and other activities.
