It is hard to imagine one coach being at 5:45 am practice, 1 p.m. practice, 2 p.m. team weight lifting, games twice a week and then topping it all off with a 7:30 p.m. scrimmage.
With the California Baptist University Women's Volleyball season still in full force and the Men's season on the horizon, Head Coach Ryan McGuyre has been going non-stop since the month of August to help prepare both of his teams for successful seasons. The men and women are each playing volleyball five days a week, making life very busy for one head coach.
Recently, Coach McGuyre opened the doors to the Van Dyne Gymnasium the night of Nov. 4 and allowed the CBU Crazies a preview of the level of play to expect this spring season from the 2010 Men's Volleyball team. Many familiar faces were on the court as the Lancer's scrimmaged Pepperdine, who ranked No. 3 last year in the NCAA. Fans were able to watch a five set match, with games going to 30, in order to see the heat that the Lancers were
going to bring to the NAIA this upcoming year.
McGuyre said the Crazies could expect to see explosiveness, power and speed on the court this
season from the men. "We have pretty much the same team this year with some new guys.A lot of returners so we are familiar with each other," said senior captain Micah Tokuda. "With a familiar team, we know what each one of us has to do in order to win [the NAIA National title] this year."
With five seniors on the team, the Lancers are loaded with experience beyond those five seniors; including sophmore Levi Cabral and junior captain Blair Penner, the CBU Lancers have the power, the skill and the desire to win it all.
"Levi Cabral will be a huge threat this year. He has a cannon arm and puts up a good block. Teams will key on him for sure," McGuyre said.
The week of Nov. 13, the Lancers headed to PauleyPavilionatUCLAinordertocompeteagainst the best teams in the NCAA. Fridays exhibition game was against the UCLA Bruins, allowing the team to prepare for their future competition. Saturdays exhibition games were against Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara. The Lancers again were able to compete against the highest level of competition they will face this upcoming season.
Coach MyGuyre said UC Irvine, Stanford, UCLA, Long Beach State, BYU, Pepperdine, CSUN and UCSB will be the teams biggest competition this 2010 season. These teams have the majority of their starting players returing to the court.
"Compared to past years, we have less international students who gave us experience and leadership; but we still have the talent to win it all", said Tokuda.
