Intramural sports offer California Baptist University students a chance to show their skills in a variety of different sports. The school offers intramural sports for all students.
The Van Dyne gym on any weekday evening has students playing basketball. Some games are just for fun while others are more competitive. There are two types of intramu- ral basketball: Boys and Girls. Both students and staff members can play in a competitive sport, but still have a great time with friends and family.
The team "Maak" for girls intramural basketball has a good show- ing of late-night games as they try their best to win. They also bring an unusual crowd to their games, as groups of crazy fans bring instruments. From tubas to big horns, fans all join in fellowship as they cheer on the team. For the last game of the season, some fans even wore banana and gorilla costumes to support their friends playing on the court. "Without our crazy fans, we would not be playing," Maak team player Laykn Riley said.
As the season comes to an end, teams in both the girls and guys intramural basketball compete hard to finish the season strong. The playoffs went smoothly and as the finals became that much closer, temperatures are heated up. The finals were held in the Van Dyne gym, Wed. night Mar.ch 10,. For the girl's finals, team 315 All-Stars take on the Ballers. The 315 All-Stars came to the finals with a perfect record (6-0), and the Ballers entered with a (5-1) record. For the guy's finals, team Space Jam took on team Perpetual Motion, a team which has a full line up roster of all engineers. Both teams came to the finals with a perfect undefeated record of (6-0).
The girl's finals game was played first, with a 315 All-stars lead at half time 16-11. The team went on to win in the second half with a dominating score of 40-20 over the Ballers. All-
star player LeeAnn Routt scored 17 points which helped gain the team win. She is not new to the sport, having played since she was in third grade. Routt is a big impact on her team. " We started off slow at first, but picked it up in the second half ", Routt said.
The guy's finals began with the national anthem. At halftime Perpetual Motion led the game with a score of 24-15. With just a few minutes left on the clock, both teams gave it their all in the last game of the season. Perpetual Motion sealed the deal in the end, winning 46-41 over team Space Jam. MVP of the game Bobby Magby of team Perpetual Motion thanked everyone for coming to support his team in their final game. " I am very proud of my team. When I was making shots the guys were always there to back me up", Magby said.
In addition to basketball, CBU also has an intramural soccer league that plays games during the week around midday. From 3:30 to around 6 p.m. you students and faculty members play soccer on the front lawn.
There are 28 teams in the league that are competing to be the 2010 Lancer Cup Champions. With only six games per team, it is a short sea- son, so teams have to come ready to play on game day.
Each team has two captains and a total of 15 players. This can vary on the days of competition, as some players cannot make every game. When playing, there must be at least two girls on the field of play during the entire game.
"Soccer is a fun sport and helps keep people in shape," Tony Ramirez said.
