After getting battered on by Concordia last month, The California Baptist University Lancers Women's Basketball team got even with the help of Tyrone Wells, famous recording artist.
Wells, who was performing at CBU's homecoming block party, was asked by Head Coach, Danielle Bishop, to be the Honorary Coach for the Women's homecoming game.
"The girls were excited," Bishop said. "He just brought about positive energy when he was in there. And, he had something to say each time that was just real encouraging."
Wells played basketball in high school, but stopped at the college level when he began to fall more in love with music. Wells said he "had a blast" being honorary coach.
"It was really cool to see the girl's dig deep and pull out a win," Wells said. "I was afraid because the other team had a couple great players. But, it was really cool to see them step up the way they did."
The Lancer's won 90-80 after a close match against the Eagle's.
The first-half was especially intense. The Eagle's put up six successful three-pointers compared to the three made by the Lancer's.
Fouls were also a common occurrence. "Blow your whistle, I can see a foul down here," Coach Bishop said loudly from the sidelines.
At half, the women were down by only three points and more fans began to trickle into the gym.
As the crowd increased in the second half, so did the Lancer's vehemence.
There was a noticeable increase in intensity during the latter half of the game. Even Nicole Fu, Eagle's guard, fouled out.
Ed and Alana Combs, CBU sweethearts from the class of '65, attended the game. Ed played basketball for CBU and now his niece, Rachel McDaniel, plays for the Women's team.
"It's very exciting to see the girl's play like this, especially when we have somebody in our family here," Alana said. "It's fun watching and their very good. It's very fast-paced. More than I had suspected."
